PICASSO AND GRACE
Picasso and Grace, from the series Nature, Culture, oil, 30″ x 40″, 2- ’07.
This painting marks the resumption of a series begun in the eighties, presenting juxtapositions of culture in nature, or of nature with culture. The subject also shows an interest that I have had in investigating the nature of representation and in showing degrees of abstraction. I am not a photo realist so my painting of Grace owes as much to the linearity and geometric design of Picasso as it does to the study of old master techniques, and to the study of the lively paint of Sargent.
